Subjects Covered in a Surgical Technology Program
Surgical technology training programs prepare students to work in operating room environments, where knowledge, accuracy and even-handedness are prized and necessary traits.
Anthem Education offers Diplomas and Associate degrees in surgical technology at several campuses, including The Bryman School of Arizona. Program courses address different types of surgery as well as procedures used in all surgeries, such as infection control, sterilization, and instrument tray set-up. The program is hands-on and students train in simulated operating room (OR) environments, complete with surgical scrubs and standard precautions.
Students take courses that address several kinds of surgeries:
- General surgery includes the study of urinary, reproductive, and digestive systems and the anatomy of these systems.
- Orthopedic surgery covers the anatomy and physiology of the skeletal and muscular systems, and injuries and diseases that affect them.
- Cardiovascular surgery covers the study of how blood functions, and anatomy and physiology of the circulatory and lymphatic systems.
- Specialty surgery includes ob/gyn, gastrointestinal, neurological, and ophthalmic surgeries.
Other classes address anesthesia and pharmacology (the study of drugs) used in ORs. Students learn how to apply and change surgical dressings and wound healing techniques, and to identify surgical and OR supplies. Classes cover information about how to perform CPR, position patients for surgery, related nursing procedures, and counting procedures, which help prevent errors such as medical sponges or instruments being left inside a patient.
Most campuses also offer a career success course that teach techniques to help students succeed in the classroom and on the job.
