Medical Assistant

Associate of Applied Science Degree

A medical assistant degree prepares students for a multifunctional career providing clinical and administrative services to medical offices. A good medical assistant program recognizes this and offers courses that combine these two disciplines.

Anthem College—Maryland Heights (St. Louis, MO) offers an Associate of Applied Science in Medical Assistant. It is an excellent option for students who want more expanded career opportunities once they have established themselves in the field. The career outlook for medical assistants is very good, and as a major metropolitan area, St. Louis is home to numerous physicians and medical facilities that employ medical assistants.

Clinical and Business Focused Medical Assistant Courses

Our associate degree program includes courses that train students in clinical procedures as well as business and communications practices that help offices run smoothly. Courses include:

Clinical Business/Communications
Cardiopulmonary/ECG Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
Laboratory/Clinical Procedures Financial Principles
Anatomy & CPR Dimensions of Human Relations

Students enter an externship with a medical office after satisfactorily completing all coursework. The externship gives them real-world experience with patients while under the supervision of medical professionals. It also further prepares students to sit for certification tests offered by major professional organizations including the American Association of Medical Assistants.

Graduates can compete for positions that include clinical or administrative medical assistant, medical secretary, or medical and clinical lab technician. The associate degree also provides a broad background that can help students advance in their careers.
