Surgical Technologist

Diploma Program

Surgical technologists are part of the operating room (OR) support team. Their responsibilities include preparing the OR before surgery, assisting the surgical team during surgery and cleaning and disinfecting the OR after surgery.

Surgical technologist programs teach these skills as well as procedures routinely performed by surgical technologists. Anthem College—Irving (Dallas, TX) offers a Diploma in Surgical Technologist that teaches the technical and professional skills needed to compete for entry-level positions with hospitals or surgical centers.

Program graduates are eligible to sit for the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) Certification Examination, Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C).

Career-Focused Surgical Technologist Courses

Students take courses in general, specialty, orthopedic and cardiovascular surgery. They learn about infection control, instrumentation, positioning the patient for surgery and surgical supplies. They study body systems, pharmacology and anesthesia, and discuss life and death in the OR.

• Students practice their skills in real-world labs designed to look like actual surgical theaters.
• All students meet with staff from our Education Department who provide academic advising and assist with creating schedules. Education staff also arrange for tutoring and help organize study groups.
• Students who need outside services to remain in school can turn to our Student Services staff for assistance. They can help students get travel vouchers, referrals for childcare or housing, and other professional services.

After successfully completing all coursework, students enroll in externships with a hospitals, surgical centers or physician offices, where they participate in surgeries to test and further develop professional skills.
