Surgical Technologist

Associate of Applied Science Degree

Surgical Technologists support operating room (OR) teams before, during and after surgical procedures. Their responsibilities can include prepping patients for surgery, preparing the OR for surgery, and cleaning and disinfecting the OR after procedures are completed.

associate degree in surgical technology

Anthem College-Irving now offers an Associate of Applied Science for students who want a broader education as Surgical Technologists. The degree program prepares them to work as a surgical technologist and provides them with the background they may need to advance in the field into supervisory or more specialized roles.

Multifaceted Surgical Technologist-Specific Courses

Courses taken for the associate degree cover topics in general, specialized, cardiovascular and orthopedic surgery. Students learn about surgical instrumentation and supplies, anesthesia and pharmacology, positioning, and infection control. They discuss life and death in the OR and cover ethics. Associate degree candidates also take general education courses in math, communications and psychology.

After completing all course requirements, students are placed in Externships where they work with surgical teams under close supervision. This gives them valuable real-world experience and prepares them for the realities of working in the OR.

Anthem College-Irving offers classes during the day and in the evenings to accommodate our students’ schedules. Our supportive environment looks out for students throughout their time in the program and offers the help they need to remain in school:

  • Our Education Department provides academic advising, helps organize study groups, and arranges for tutoring.
  • Our Student Services Department works with students looking for part-time jobs, childcare, transportation options, even housing.
