Anthem College-Irving offers a Medical Assistant Associate of Applied Science degree that prepares students for entry-level positions in clinical offices. Positions can include medical assistants, medical secretaries, and laboratory technicians.

Hands-on Medical Assistant Degree Courses

Students in the associate degree program study a full range of medical topics and engage in hands-on learning. They are taught how to give injections, perform venipuncture, and how to measure blood pressure, body temperature, pulse, and respiratory rates. They learn laboratory procedures and diagnostics and are trained to perform emergency procedures. They also learn how to operate electrocardiology (ECG) devices and read graphs.

Coursework includes learning medical terminologies, medical insurance and billing processes, and medical recordkeeping. Students learn key administrative procedures including correspondence, appointment scheduling and patient communications. Students also take general education courses in math, psychology and other subjects.

After they successfully complete coursework, students enter an Externship in a healthcare setting.
