Dental Assistant Program

Dental Assistants deliver patient care, laboratory, x-ray, and office services in dental practices.

The Dental Assistant program offered by Anthem Education schools and colleges, also called Dental Assisting at some campuses, uses a career-focused approach to prepare students for entry-level positions in dental offices and clinics.

Students are introduced to dental science and learn basic dental office laboratory and administrative procedures. They receive hands-on training that includes chairside skills, instrument and tray set up and sterilization, dental radiography, dental procedural coding, and dental office skills.

Dental assistants work closely with patients as well as the dental care team. They instruct patients on proper brushing and flossing, explain procedures, and answer questions.

Students who graduate from the Dental Assistant program are candidates for entry-level positions, of which most are in dentist offices. They enter an expanding field; according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for well-trained dental assistants will grow by more than 30% from 2010 to 2020. Here are a few reasons for this expected increase:

  • Demand for preventive dental care services, which research has linked to better overall health.
  • Dentists will spend more time on complex procedures, requiring dental assistants to handle the more routine work.
  • According to the Pew Center on the States, decades of fluoride in public water supplies have resulted in more people keeping their teeth as they age, particularly the Baby Boom generation. There is every expectation that they will continue to maintain and treat their teeth and gums.

Here is more information about the Dental Assistant field and the story of one particularly successful graduate.
